Champion pt4 ~ Adjusting

 


           He jerks you behind himself roughly, gripping the hilt of his sword as he watches the screen warily as the murderer comes into view. You sweat drop, watching him glare at the t.v warily. “Kid. He’s not real.” You assure him calmly.
          “He looks real…” He mutters.
          “He’s not.” You repeat, moving back beside him.
          “Alright… It’s weird to watch though. How do they make them so tiny?” He tilts his head.
         “I can do that too.” You smile, grabbing your phone and bringing up the video. You scoot over to him and lean up to him. “See the screen? That’s us.” You hum, pressing record. Kid looks at the screen curiously.
       “So, its like a mirror?” He looks at you slightly confused.
       “Something like that... It’s hard to explain.” You admit and stop recording to show him the little video. He straightens in surprise.
       “That’s my voice…?” He murmurs.
       “Yep, it’s nice and rugged.” You chuckle thoughtfully. He looks at you for a moment before putting a pillow over your face.
       “Saying weird things…” He grumbles.
       “Hehe I guess you’re not used to compliments.” You lean away from the pillow. He scoffs and gets up.
       “Lets go out,” He stretches and pauses before tilting his head. “…. Please.” He adds.
        “You don’t have to say please if you want to go out. Plus… It feels weird if you ask if you can do things.” You get up and slip on some shoes.  
         “Finally. You know how annoying it is to ask for permission to do anything? And if I didn’t, they put me in that tiny cage and….” He trails off as you look at him in concern. “It’s nothing.”
         “Doesn’t sound like nothing..” You frown. He pauses before reaching over and pinching your cheeks.
         “Stop looking at me like that! It’s weird!” He snaps.
         “Ow! Let go!” You whine, touching his hands. He huffs and releases your cheeks.
         “Come on.” He says before leading you out. You hum quietly as you follow after him, letting him wander around. It was kinda weird having him around, he had so little experience with this present world. Still, it made you feel good to have him walking with you.
         “Any place you want to go to?” You ask him when he finally stops.
         “No…” He admits, shoulders drooping. You hum and look around thoughtfully.  
         “Come on, lets go walk near the river outside of town.” You smile, leading him off thoughtfully. It was an old favorite of yours, being amongst nature and listening to the moving water. He watches you silently, following along with his hands in his pockets.
          Leaving town, you cross a field to reach the river and walk beside it with a small hum. “Do…. You come here often?” He asks.
          “It’s been a while… I used to come here with Ace but…” You scratch your cheek. “He hasn’t been coming over much since I turned him down.” You admit.
          “Ah… Yeah you probably broke his heart.” He comments flatly. You stop and bow your head.
         “I feel bad enough already…” You sigh. Kid blinks and scratches his cheek.
          “Don’t feel bad, it’s already done. If he’s a man, he’ll come back.” Kid brushes past, looking around quietly. You watch his back curiously.
          “Did you ever have someone you liked?” You ask him.
           “If you’re asking about romantic interests, then no. As long as I’ve been around, no one caught my eye in such a way.” He says looking through the trees. He seemed to enjoy this scenery more than the rest.
          “Really? Wow… Then again you don’t seem like the romance type.” You comment deciding to sit down, facing the river. Kid stops and looks at your back for a bit.
          “Do you have someone like that?” He inquires.
          “Not yet.” You stretch your arms over your head. “You wanna stay here? Or keep going?”
           “Can we go there?” He points at the tall buildings on the horizon.
           “The city? Maybe tomorrow.” You hum eyes sliding down to the rushing water. “The school is near there so I’ll take you with me.”
            “…. School…” He echoes. “I don’t remember ever going to one…” He rubs his cheek and you look back.
            “Can you read?” You ask him.  Kid straightens, shifting his gaze.
            “Lets go back.” He says walking off. You pause, watching after him. It amazed you really, as long as he’s been around…. Then again, a lot has probably changed since he had to read. You get up and hurry to his side.
          “Hey, I can teach you if you want. It might help you adjust.” You tell him. Kid looks at you for a bit.  
         “Uh… If that’s what you want to waste your time with…” He shrugs.
          “It’s not a waste of time. I want to help you.” You frown at him.  He meets your gaze and tilts his head.
          “Alright… Lets do that.”
